Nigeria House of Reps members exchange blows over leadership

   Here we go again with our legislatures drama. Members of Nigeria’s House of Representatives yesterday engaged in physical brawl over the election of House principal officers. The House broke into two factions, one supporting the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, which seeks to choose the House principal officers, and another, backing the speaker, Yakubu Dogara, who insists on defying the party.
The House and the Senate have been rocked by crisis over the election of their principal officers.
At the heart of the fighting is the leadership crisis, which has engulfed the House since the controversial inauguration of the National Assembly on June 9.
Yesterday's crisis started as the speaker arrived at the House to commence plenary. Shortly after settling in, APC members began to raise points of order as some lawmakers rushed for the mace, the symbol of authority of the House. Meanwhile, the mace has been retrieved and is being kept in the inner office of the Speaker, Yakubu Dogara. President Muhammadu Buhari and the All Progressives Congress governors had asked that the lawmakers respect the party’s nominees for the remaining leadership positions.
